The Lankan Crisis- All You Need To Know

Image
On October 26, the President of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena had sacked the Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe and had appointed former President, Mahinda Rajapaksa with immediate effect. This came as a shocker for all the Sri Lankans and caused a widespread protest and riots. Sirisena was known to be a gentle person and little did they know that he was a 'wolf disguised in a sheep's clothing'. Maithripala Sirisena The fact to be noted is that the nation’s President and Prime Minister come from traditionally opposing parties that formed a surprise coalition in 2015 to oust the then-president Mahinda Rajapaksa, who many feared was becoming too powerful. In the past two years, this ruling coalition has started to fall apart. It is dysfunctional and unpopular with the Sri Lankan public. Since at least February this year, president Maithripala Sirisena has been searching for ways to remove the prime minister, Ranil Wickremasinghe. On October 26th, he

Things You Don't Know About Kerala Floods

It was a normal, rainy day of August 15. India was celebrating its 71st year of Independence. School was closed, and I was sitting in front of the box, with my morning dose of caffeine (you know what I mean), watching India celebrate her independence. It was raining 'cats and dogs' since early morning. Everyone, including me, thought this rain would subside after sometime, like how it rains any other day. But little did we know that this rain would be... ONE HECK OF A RAIN! After the Prime Minister's address, I switched off the television and went back to doing my own thing, which apparently is studying. But I got a message saying that my exams have been postponed because of heavy flooding in school. "Shit... Did I hear 'heavy flooding'?" I became nervous. My fridge had gone down due to voltage fluctuations, and if it floods near my area, I am certainly DOOMED, as I neither had enough stock of food nor did I have any refrigerating options. But the p

Is it a hung government in Karnataka?

The Karnataka election results are out. The Bharatiya Janata Party, better known as the BJP, has won the election with 104 seats, without even reaching the half-way mark. The half way mark was 113. 2018 Karnataka legislative assembly election results Updated at 12:12 PM GMT+3 Seats  ·  Projections  ·  222/224 seats declared 113 needed for majority Party Seats BJP 104 46.4% INC 78 34.8% JD(S) 37 16.5% Other parties 3 1.3% Source: ECI via Nielsen.  Feedback In a quick turn of events, the Congress extended full support to the Janata Dal (Secular), aloso known as the JD(S) for forming the government. Both the Congress and the JD(S) have put together more MLAs than the actual number of 111. Legally, the Congress gets to form the government yet again as they have the support of 116 MLAs and two independent MLAs. The BJP may try to get the power to form the government with the h

White, Brown or Green?

The Taj Mahal, one of the World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO, is changing colours. But isn’t that its speciality, changing colours during the course of the day? Actually it is. A few years ago, you all might have heard The Taj turning yellow because of the increasing pollution. Now it is turning brown and green. This pollution was, or IS caused by the industries located near the River Yamuna. These industries leave a ton of smoke into the atmosphere and also released effluents into the Yamuna. This, in turn polluted the river water. Yamuna has a lot of settlements on its banks and they depend upon this river water for the domestic activities. The Taj Mahal in 1992 (left) and in 2018 (right) (Courtesy by telegraph.co.uk) The most interesting fact is that the authorities, who are responsible for the maintenance of the monument, are bothered about this now. They do not know that this started taking place a few years back. No one was bothered about it then. When the indus

The Korean War has OFFICIALLY ended!

Image
Yes. You read it correct. The Korean War has 'officially' ended with both North and South Korea signing a peace treaty. The Korean War was a war between North Korea, supported by its communist allies, and South Korea, with its principal support coming from the United States of America. But you all must be wondering- "hadn't the Korean War already ended way back in 1953?" Actually the answer is NO. In 1953, Both North and South Korea had signed an armistice. The armistice was only a cease fire between the military forces, rather than an agreement between the two governments. The peace treaty was signed just a few days ago, thereby ending the state of hostility between the two nations. (Courtesy by Google Images) Now, North Korea has said, or vowed, to shut down the country's nuclear test sites and also to open the process to experts and journalists from South Korea and United States of America. The North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has revealed plans

Shadow Cabinet in Kerala

Image
A new cabinet has taken oath on Saturday. Now you all may be wondering- "Which cabinet is he taking about? There are a few more days left for the Karnataka election". No, I am not talking about the Karnataka government. I am talking about a shadow cabinet that has been formed in Kerala.  There is not much reported by the media about it, as usual, but the shadow cabinet has been formed with the aim of monitoring government decisions and making it 'public-friendly'. The most interesting fact is that it is composed not by any politicians or run by any party, but by the civilians.  Now all of you might be wanting to know more about 'Shadow Cabinet', so I have looked up in the internet and found out what it really is, so as to give you a more clearer idea of what it actually is- " A shadow cabinet is an alternative cabinet formed with the aim of monitoring government decisions. Often the Opposition comprises a shadow cabinet, but in this case,

Red Fort handed to Corporates!

Image
The Modi Government has leased the iconic Red Fort to Dalmia Bharat Group. The group has bought it for a whooping sum of 25 crores for a period of five years in the name of conserving and developing it. Now, it is the government's responsibility to maintain the historic monuments of the country. They have started taking huge amounts of money from us in the form of taxes. But none of it is being used for 'conserving monuments' and the monuments are being sold to corporate firms, who eventually starts using these monuments for profitable activities.  😡

Justice for Asifa!

It is both shocking and heartbreaking to hear the news about the death of Asifa, the eight year old who was brutally raped. But even after this, the public is supporting those rapists witb religious slogans. The public is literally blinded of all these things. Dear 'Government of India', you had time to change the currency, introduce a brand new taxation system called GST, reduce corruption at administrative levels, but didn't you have the time to take action against these rapists? Remember there isn't much time for 2019...

Madhu- A forgotten story

It looks like everyone has forgotten about Madhu, a tribal, who was killed for stealing food to satisfy his hunger pangs. There is neither any news about the accused in the media channels nor are there any more major investigations being done by the police. I am pretty sure that either of the two might have happened- one, the accused people have fled the state or the country, or two, they have settled the issue through money. If there was a celebrity involved in this case, by this time, the court proceedings would be going on. Everything would be happening quickly. Even the media would be following it up every minute. They would start their own investigation and bring out exclusives every minute. But the Madhu case is no more sensational for these 'sensationalists'. These 'sensationalists' are constantly behind new cases, in order to increase their channel rating. They are treating this issue as if it has taken place decades ago. They are all now behind Vijay Mally
